Get It While It’s Hot – Artist Neopen

Available for free for 24 hours starting now is the PSD file of this image above, done by artist Nicolas “Neopen” André,. Fotolia, the stock imaging site, hosts the Ten Collection for which they’ve asked 10 French artists to create a unique high quality piece using images found on their site.  Their photoshop file is then offered for free for a day, after it costs $9. This month’s artist Neopen is a French art director, who was enthralled with design at at a young age. Many people agree that education is important and aspire to excel in traditional learning institutions. However education comes in many forms and “school” isn’t for everyone. This certainly applies to Neopen. He is an artist who removed himself from school and teaches himself, quite successfully, with freedom to work on what moves him. He’s done some of everything and has had clientele such as Sean John, Warner music, and EMI. By the way, if you want to learn about a pretty dope non-traditional design institution click here.

At the moment, Neopen has a film making and motion graphics collaboration called Das Schloss with fellow Ten Collection artist Damien “Elroy” Vignaux. So do check out his videos on Vimeo. Also watch his Ten Collection interview below and view examples of his graphic/web design work.

Ten Collection Artist Joolz

There’s still some time left! Fotolia, the stock imaging site, hosts the Ten Collection for which they’ve asked 10 French artists to create a unique high quality piece using images found on their site. Their Photoshop File is available to download free for the first 24 hours (regular price $9) and as of right now there’s about 9 hours left. The artist for the month of April is Julien Morel aka Joolz. He’s a musician who has evolved into a gifted Graphic Designer. Joolz actually started by designing CD covers and music related material and now has clientele all over Europe and America. He says he tries to bring an “old time” feel to his work and has a deep appreciation for the physical/tactile/handcrafted. While he keeps busy in the fields of advertising, music, web design, illustration etc. Joolz makes time to be a permanent contributor to the blog/magazine Artskills.

Who I’m Following on Behance: Rob Shields & Cooky Yoon

I’m keeping it short and sweet this post because my wrists are killing me! I’ve taken a pain reliever and hopefully all will be well in the morning. However, here’s some killer work. Rob Shields is a remarkable self-taught artist with degrees in Psychology and Philosophy. He’s been featured in many publications and his client list includes entities such as Smirnoff and Digital Arts. This first stunning digital painting is what immediately drew me in to his work. It’s based on the villain from Sleeping Beauty.

Jiyoung Yoon aka Cooky Yoon is a graphic designer based in Seoul, South Korea who has a beautifully fresh take on typography. She expresses that designing is even more important than eating food. One of my favorite projects of hers so far is the posting of her latest printed portfolio. Glimpses of it along with other work can be viewed below.

Free Wallpaper: My World Without Art

What really inspired me to create this March wallpaper was an article I read; Thanks to One Los Angeles Nonprofit, Budget Cuts Haven’t Killed Off Art Class which in short talks about the benefits of being involved in the arts and the program Inner-City Arts. Inner-City Arts offers an immersive well-rounded art experience to every Los Angeles public school student even if they can’t afford it. I didn’t grow up in the American school system, so I can’t speak personally about how cutting art programs has affected me. However, I can tell you that my life would be pretty empty without art. No exaggeration. My right brain dominates. I’m good at math and science, but subjects like chemistry and accounting never appealed to me. I took them out of necessity. Art was the class I lived for.

I still remember the first time I realized that I had some creative ability. It was in 6th grade and I drew a green cyclops with 4 arms and pincers. It was chosen to be in my school’s art exhibition. It wasn’t earth shattering, but imagine if I didn’t have that experience or the art classes and teachers that encouraged my talent.  I believe I would still be a Graphic Designer because art is at my core, however I would have to battle an intense learning curve., not even knowing the basics. When I made the career decision to leave Architecture behind, I had the confidence of taking years of art classes in my belt. I knew I had potential. So I think it’s sad that creative programs are the first to be cut.

In a survey conducted by IBM last year, 1,500 CEOs identified creativity as the number one competitive edge” of the future. And Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently wrote that dance, music, theater, and visual arts “are essential to preparing our nation’s young people for a global economy fueled by innovation and creativity.”Read more…

Now, more about the wallpaper itself. I did a rough sketch of the splashes, took it into Illustrator, and copied the shapes in separate layers in Photoshop. View my project on Behance to see details and the screenshots of the process. I’m fascinated by airbrushing in Photoshop and I love how the splashes turned out. The objects represent what came to mind when I think of art, the tools to create, travel, colors, music, dancing, architecture etc. Enjoy! Of course constructive feedback is always welcome.

Silly me, I just missed it: Ten Collection Artist Elroy

What’s life if you can’t laugh and learn from your mistakes? Fotolia, the stock imaging site, hosts the Ten Collection for which they’ve asked 10 French artists to create a unique high quality piece using images found on their site. Their Photoshop File is available to download free for the first 24 hours (regular price $9) and I just missed it. I was actually on the site in time, but I mistakenly thought the clock was counting down the time until the file was available, however it was really telling me the time I had left. Oh well, I sense a purchase in my future. Enough about me now, check out the artist Damien Vignaux a.k.a Elroy. He’s my favorite so far.

Elroy is a freelancer that got his start creating artwork for friends (posters, cd covers, etc.) which eventually grew into a full-time enterprise. Now living in Berlin, his clients are from all over the globe. His creativity extends to not only print, but to photography, film, music, and motion graphics. Add VJing into the mix, I’m not really sure when he has time to sleep. Elroy is also the co-founder of the Play Collective and Studio Incog. In his interview he states that he loves constantly pushing himself to be better, fresh, different and diverse. Watch the interview and see examples of his work below. He gives some good advice to other designers.
